CD4029 belongs to the CD4000 IC series. It is a presettable up/down binary/decade counter which counts in either binary or decade mode depending on the voltage level applied at binary/decade input. The counter is advanced one count at the positive-going edge of the clock if the carry in and preset enable inputs are at logical ‘‘0’’. Advancement is inhibited when either or both of these two inputs is at logical ‘‘1’’. The carry out signal normally at the logical ‘‘1’’ state and goes to the logical ‘‘0’’ state when the counter reaches its maximum count in the ‘‘up’’ mode or the minimum count in the ‘‘down’’ mode provided the carry input is at the logical ‘‘0’’ state. The IC offers a wide variety of features such as high noise immunity, ESD barring, and I/O static protection using clamping diodes.
Up/Down Binary/Decade Counter
A binary/decade up/down counter is a simple digital logic configuration that can count immediate as well as subsequent events in an increase as well as decreasing order. For example a 4-bit binary up/down counter can count from 0000 to 1111 and also from 1111 to 0000. A simple Binary up/down counter can easily be made by rigging at least two D – type flip flops. A 4 bit binary counter will act as a decade counter by skipping any six outputs out of the 16 (24) outputs.

Application
- Alarm Clock, Set AC Timer, Set time in camera to take the picture, flashing light indicator in automobiles, car parking control etc.
- Counting the time allotted for special process or event by the scheduler.
- UP/DOWN counter can be used as a self-reversing counter.
