DC Converters provide DC power for various tools such as test benches, electronic trainer boards, etc. The primary function of a DC converter supply is to shift an input DC Signal to a higher or lower voltage level. So, in this project, we are going to build a simple 5V 800mA Power Supply Circuit Using LM1117 linear voltage regulator IC.

The main component of this 5V 800mA Power Supply is an LM1117 linear voltage regulator IC. LM1117 is a regulator IC with built-in features like overheat protection, the ability to drive 800 mA output current load, load & line regulation, etc. It is known for its small form factor since it is available as a DIY Package (SMD Component). There are many types of LM1117, the fixed types provide a fixed output voltage of 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V, or 5V and the variable voltage regulator can have a variable voltage from 1.25V to 13.8V.

Working Explanation

the heart of this circuit is an LM1117 Linear Voltage Regulator IC. the working of this circuit is very simple. A DC Signal of 6.2V to 20V serves as an input to the circuit. It passes through a smoothing capacitor (10uF) to remove any residual noise from the input.

The DC signal then serves as an input to the Vin pin of the voltage regulator IC. The LM1117 produces a constant 5V/800mA DC output which passes through a smoothing capacitor (33uF), before going towards the output.

Applications

  • DC Power supplies find their use in applications such as DC test benches, appliances & trainer equipment.
  • Commonly used in testing small electronic projects.
