Static Electricity Detector using 2N3819 MOSFET

In this tutorial, we are making an interesting and simple project of a Static electricity detector. This circuit is highly sensitive and is able to detect static charge in any substance at a 2-3 feet distance. It can also test your room ionizer and detect the electric field in a wire from a foot away. This circuit is easy and inexpensive as it is only using a few components. Another interesting thing about this circuit is that you can do various experiments with this little project. The main component of this project is the 2N3819 Field-effect transistor FET. It is a kind of transistor that uses the electric field to control the flow of current.

This is a very interesting and simple project of a highly sensitive static electricity detector circuit, it can also be used as an ion detector, electric field detector, etc.

Static Electricity Detector Circuit

Working Explanation

The operating voltage of this circuit is 3 volts DC. A variable resistor of 1K ohms is used to increase and decrease the sensitivity of this circuit. This circuit is highly sensitive. For a visual indication of detection, we have used an LED. We have connected a 5-inch long antenna at the gate terminal of the transistor. Any charge present around will be detected by the antenna and sent to the gate of the transistor.

The charge will now flow from the source gate to the drain gate of the FET and it will activate the LED. This will indicate the presence of a charge.

Applications and Uses

  • Static charge detection
  • Electric field detection in a wire
  • Ion detector
