In this tutorial, we are going to make a “Simple PAM8403 Audio Amplifier Circuit”.

PAM8403 is an Amplifier IC. This IC is a filterless dual-channel, 3W, class-D stereo Audio Amplifier, that offers low THD+N which allows it to achieve high-quality sound reproduction from a stereo input and also provides an efficiency of up to 90%. It has a special feature that is, it can drive speakers directly from its output. It can give 3W output with a 4Ω Loud Speaker and the Operating voltage for this IC range from 2.5 V to 5.5 V making it ideal for adding the audio capability to your MP3 and MP4 player projects. With a few easily available external components simple PAM8403 amplifier circuit can be designed.

Working Explanations

IC PAM8403 is an SOP-16 Package IC, the new filterless architecture allows the device to drive the speaker directly, requiring no low-pass output filters. As any major amplifier system needs to have short circuit protection, PAM8403 has inbuilt short circuit protection that is essential for trouble-free operations. As we can see in this circuit supplies are applied from J4 Connector to Analog VDD and Power VDD. Power GND and Analog GND are also applied from J4 Connector. Connector J1 acts as an audio Input terminal, INL and INR pins are used for left and right channel input. Here stereo input Right and left channel audio signals from source connected, then to the IC through variable Resistor and Capacitor filter.

These 0.47µf ceramic capacitors reduce noise caused by the power supply coupling into the output drive signal. Output audio signal for right loudspeaker connected in J2 and output signal for left loudspeaker connected in J3 connector. By varying the variable resistors RV1, RV2 we can control the output volume in the loudspeaker. Mute and SHND (Shutdown) Pins are Active low pins by applying GND supply to these pins we can mute and shut down the PAM8403 from its operation.

Applications

  • Can be used for Portable Speakers, Portable DVD Players, Game Machines.
  • Can be used in any possible amplifier-based project where small space and 5V output is available.
