LT1078 IC is a dual Single Supply Precision operational amplifier. The IC can be operated from a single supply (as low as one lithium cell or two Ni-Cad batteries). The input range goes below ground. The all-NPN output stage swings to within a few millivolts of ground while sinking current; therefore, no power consuming pull down resistors are needed. The IC also offers many additional features such as low thermal dissipation and high noise immunity.
Precision operational amplifier
Precision amplifiers are op amps with better design specifications in terms of precision offset, zero-drift over time, lower internal noise, and input bias current. Precision op-amps are used in analog filters where they do not distort or DC offset the signal of interest. Their functionality and mode of use is somewhat similar to conventional op – amps; but, the output is precise, accurate, and virtually free of any kind of noise.
For Example; a LM741 op-amp, has an offset voltage of 5mV. The offset voltage signifies the voltage that the user has to apply between the +ve and -ve of the IC, in order to get an output of 0V. On configuring the op-amp to operate at a gain of 100. The gain will not only multiply the input signal, but it will also multiply the offset voltage. This will result in the output voltage being off-value by a factor of +/-0.5V. On considering the OP177; a precision op-amp, with an offset voltage of 25uV. The same gain value of 100, would produce an error of only 2.5mV in a signal that has been amplified by a factor of 100.
