The KY-005 is an Infrared Transmitter Module that belongs to the series IR inter-communication sensors, along with KY-022 which is an infrared receiver module. This IR module works on a basic principle in which an infrared LED emits infrared radiation at a specific frequency of 38khz at the angle of 20 degrees in its surroundings. Mainly such type of IR modules used in remote manufacturing and IR communication industry.

This sensor is perfectly compatible with many developmental boards such as Arduino, Esp8266 WIFI Module. This sensor consists of a 5mm LED upon receiving appropriate voltage which ranges from 3.3 to 5Volts, it emits an Infrared light beam of 940 nm at an angle of 20 degrees. This sensor consumes 30 to 60 milliamps of current during its full operation. Along with IR LED there are some pre-resistors embedded in the module. For Atmel based microcontroller such as 8051 and Arduino, a resistor of 220 ohms is used at the voltage of 5V and for ARM-Cortex M3 and M4 microcontroller such as Tiva tm4c123 launchpad a resistor of 150 ohms is used to maximize its full operation.
