In this tutorial, we are going to make a Dual power supply using a 555 timer IC. Most of the time a dual power supply is required for balanced operation in certain electronic circuits. This circuit is inexpensive and efficient to fulfill all those requirements.
The main component of this circuit is a 555 timer IC. This IC is very useful, has low cost, and is easily available anywhere. A 555 timer is a versatile IC that is used in oscillator, timer, and pulse generation applications. It works as an oscillator, and flip-flop element and can provide delays. It has three modes of operation. Astable, monostable and bistable mode. For this circuit, we are using this IC as an astable multivibrator. In this mode, IC generates continuous steam of square waves.

Dual Power Supply Circuit
Working Explanation
Since the 555 timer IC is wired as an astable multivibrator it will oscillate square wave pulse continuously. The oscillating frequency depends upon the value of the capacitor and the resistor. Here we have used a 12K ohms resistor and 0.002uF capacitor.
To get positive and negative voltage from the square wave. We have used two diodes for rectification and capacitors for charging and discharging the voltage. The output pulse of this IC will go directly into them. The square wave has both positive and negative cycles and through rectification, we can remove one part. The first diode and capacitor will remove the negative part and will only provide a positive voltage. In the second part, the positive part will be removed to get a negative voltage at the output. The operating voltage is 3-15 Volts DC and the output current of this circuit is 50mA.
