As high-tech electronic products and their power supplies continue to shrink in size and expand in ability and performance if we will not consider it electronic gadgets would be much slower and bulkier. So nowadays every electronic product and firmware developers try to pick compact and powerful components for their prototype and product to stand out in the market competition.
In this article, we have listed a compact 5 Amp SMD Voltage Regulator. A voltage regulator is a system designed to automatically maintain a constant voltage. As we are going to specifically look at the TO-252 SMD package, depending on the requirement we can choose fixed or variable voltage regulators available in the TO-252 SMD package. Following SMD Voltage Regulators reduce the time taken for PCB footprint implementation and it can easily be placed in D-Pak or TO-252 Footprint.
SMD D-Pak (TO-252) Voltage Regulators
1. AZ1084CD
AZ1084CD from Diodes Incorporated is a series of low dropout adjustable linear positive voltage regulators with a maximum dropout of 1.5V at 5A of load current. It can give variable voltage from 1.25V to 10.5V at 5A current output. This device takes 10mA as a Quiescent. The series features on-chip thermal limiting, which protects against any combination of overload and ambient temperatures that would create excessive junction temperatures. It also includes a trimmed bandgap reference and a current limiting circuit. The AZ1084C is available in 1.5V, 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V, and 5.0V versions. The fixed versions integrate the adjusted resistors. It is also available in an adjustable version which can set the output voltage with two external resistors. It has applications in high-efficiency linear regulators, battery chargers, post-regulation for switching supply, microprocessor supply, desktop PCs, RISC, and embedded processors’ Supply.
2. KD1084ADT25R
KD1084ADT25R from STMicroelectronics is a LOW DROP fixed positive linear voltage regulator able to provide up to 5 A of output current. Dropout is guaranteed at a maximum of 1.5 V at the maximum output current, decreasing at lower loads. It can take up to 12 volts as input and gives fixed 2.5 Volt as output with 5A current output. This device takes a 10mA Quiescent current. The KD1084xx is pin-to-pin compatible with the older 3-terminal adjustable regulators but has better performances in terms of drop and output tolerance. It has a short circuit and over-temperature protection setup. A 2.85 V output version is suitable for SCSI-2 active termination. Unlike PNP regulators, where a part of the output current is wasted as quiescent current, the KD1084xx quiescent current flows into the load, so increases efficiency. Only a 10 µF minimum capacitor is needed for stability.
3. AP1084D33L-13
AP1084D33L-13 from Diode Incorporated is a low dropout positive adjustable or fixed-mode linear voltage regulator IC with up to 5.0A output current capability. It can take 4.7V to 12V as input power supply and gives fixed output voltage depending on the device specifications (1.5V, 1.8V, 2.5V,
3.3V, 5.0V) with 5A current output. This device has a built-in thermal shutdown option, 1.4V maximum dropout at full load current, fast transient response, and good noise rejection. The product is specifically designed to provide a well-regulated supply for low voltage IC applications such as high-speed bus termination and low current 3.3V logic supply. AP1084 is also well suited for other applications such as VGA cards. AP1084 is guaranteed to have lower than 1.4V dropout at full load current making it ideal to provide well-regulated outputs of 1.25 to 3.3V with 4.7 to 12V input supply.
4. FAN1585ADX
The FAN1585A is a low dropout three-terminal regulator with 5A output current capability. FAN1585ADX from ON Semiconductor is a Positive Adjustable Linear Voltage Regulator with a 5-amp current output rating. It can take input voltage up to 18V and gives variable output voltage from 1.5V to 3.6V with 5 Amp current output. This device utilizes minimum Quiescent current and has Load regulation: 0.05% typical, trimmed current limit (Current limit is trimmed to ensure specified output current and controlled short-circuit current), fast transient response Over-current, Over temperature, and short circuit protection features. On-chip thermal limiting protects any combination of overload and ambient temperature that would create excessive junction temperatures. These devices have been optimized for low voltage applications including VTT bus termination for FC-PGA, where transient response and minimum input voltage are critical. The FAN1585A is ideal for low voltage microprocessor applications requiring a regulated output from 1.5V to 3.6V with an input supply of 5V or less.
5. IRU1050CD
The IRU1050CD is a low dropout three-terminal adjustable regulator, it is a positive adjustable linear voltage regulator IC with a minimum of 5A output current capability. It can take input voltage up to 7 volt and gives adjustable output voltage from 2.5V to 3.3V with a 5A output load current. This device consumes a 10mA Quiescent current. It has over-current and over-temperature protection features. This product is specifically designed to provide a well-regulated supply for low voltage IC applications.
