Audio Amplifier Circuit Using TDA2003 – Power Amplifier

An audio power amplifier is an electronic amplifier that amplifies low-power audio signals such as the signal from a radio receiver or an electric guitar to a level that is strong enough for driving loudspeakers or headphones. Different kinds of sound systems such as sound reinforcement systems, public addresses, home audio systems & musical instrument amplifiers like guitar amplifiers use different types of audio amplifiers. In this project. we will design a 7 Watt audio amplifier circuit using a TDA2003 audio amplifier IC.

TDA2003 is a general-purpose audio amplifier circuit IC for stereo or mono audio design circuits. This amplifier IC can output up to 3.5A current to drive speakers & can also handle high currents up to 5A for a shorter duration without any damage. It can also handle short circuits in both AC & DC rails without damaging itself. It has an operating voltage of 18V but can handle high voltages up to 28V. This makes it robust to be used in automotive audio designs such as car stereos.

Working Explanation

The TDA2003 amplifier IC delivers a 7 Watt output power using a 12V, 500mA power supply with a 4Ω speaker. TDA2003A is a 5-pin audio amplifier IC. Pins 5 & 3 power the Amplifier IC, and the audio signal to be amplified is given in through pin 1 which is the non-inverting input. The amplified audio output can be obtained on an audio transducer such as a loudspeaker through pin 4. Also, the two important components are the values related to the series RC combination of the capacitor (1822pF) & resistor (100 Ohms) which sets the bandwidth for the amplifier. Also, the Resistors R1 and R2 are used for setting the gain of the amplifier.

Applications

  • Used in audio automotive designs such as car stereos, radios & Hi-Fi audio setups.
  • Widely used in sound systems such as speakers, high-power megaphones, & large-scale acoustic systems.
  • An integral part of entertainment systems such as home theatre setups.
  • It can be used to cascade audio speakers.
  • Also used for military applications such as acoustic weapons.
