Introduction
If you have a car and you are used to driving it, then you must have an idea of what a tachometer is; if not, then know that in cars, there is a device that indicates which gear your vehicle is in. This device is a tachometer device. The operation of a car’s engine is monitored using a tachometer. To put it another way, it is a device or equipment that is used to monitor the rotational speed of a spinning device. To put it another way, this device calculates the RMS factor; i.e. rotations per minute. This device is most frequently used to identify the speed of a rotating shaft operated by an engine. So, In this tutorial, we have decided to make a “Simple Tachometer Circuit”.
To make this tachometer, here we are using easily available parts electronic components such as MOC7811 and two seven-segment display units. With this circuit, we can measure the speed of a spinning shaft or disc in RPS.

Tachometer Circuit
Working Explanation
This Simple Tachometer Circuit includes the IC555, MOC 7811, IC CD4081, IC CD4069, and IC 4033, as well as the LTS 543 seven-segment display unit. The green LED1 displays the sensing length when the timer IC 555 is set as a monostable multivibrator. Thus, produces a timing pulse when switch S2 is pushed.
The MOC 7811 IC2 has an infrared transmitter and photodiode that create different logic levels depending on whether the IR light beam is blocked or interrupted. CD4033, a Johnson decade counter, is enabled by AND logic gate N1 and this counter operate the seven-segment.
Application and Uses
- With the help of a tachometer, one can determine the engine’s overall conditions.
- To determine the operating speed of the motor.
- In automotive vehicles and cars, etc.
