CD4026 is constructed using the complementary MOS (CMOS) technology, integrated with p-type and n-type enhancement mode transistors. CD4026 consists of a 5 stage Johnson decade counter and an output decoder which converts the Johnson code to a 7 segment decoded output for driving one stage in a numerical display. A high RESET signal clears the decade counter to its zero counts. The counter is advanced one count at the positive clock signal transition if the CLOCK INHIBIT signal is low. The CARRY-OUT (Cout) signal completes one cycle every ten CLOCK INPUT cycles and is used to clock the succeeding decade directly in a multi-decade counting chain. The seven decoded outputs illuminate the proper segments in a seven segment display device used for representing the decimal numbers 0 to 9. The output of the IC always comes in TTL, making it easy to interface with other TTL, CMOS, and NMOS devices.

A decade counter is a serial digital counter which can count up to 10 decimal digits. It goes through 10 unique combinations of output & RESETS for every new clock input. A BCD counter can count 0000, 0001, 0010, 1000, 1001, 1010, 1011, 1110, 1111, 0000, and 0001 and so on.
