Regulated power supplies are the most commonly used devices in electronics, they have a variety of different voltages either positive or negative, or both. In this tutorial, we are making a project of a 9V Regulated Power Supply using LM2940 IC. These ICs come in different output voltage options since we are making a 9V supply therefore we chose the 9V version of this IC.
LM2940 is a low positive dropout voltage regulator series that comes in a TO-220 transistor package, surface mount package, and metal can package. These voltage regulators are reliable and cost-effective, they have a wide variety of applications and can be used to perform many voltage stabilizations and drop-out tasks. This IC’s internal circuitry consists of various built-in features that ensure long-term performance and stability. Some of those built-in features include short circuit limitation, reverse battery polarity protection, able to source 1A output current with a voltage difference of only 0.5 volts, etc.

Working Explanation
The working of this circuit is very simple. The 12V input voltage is filtered from a capacitor and then it is dropped to 9V when coming out of the voltage regulator IC. there is another filtering capacitor at the output of this IC this clears all the noise from the output-regulated voltage. You can either use a 12V 2A plug pack for the input supply or a 12V/2A power supply. There is a change of IC dissipating some heat during operation therefore it’s necessary to use a suitable heatsink.
