Working Explanation

The circuit works in two stages. First, the part of the transistor, and second, the IC and display part. The part of transistors includes the use of both the PNP and NPN transistors. The two NPN transistors together produce continuous pulses, each working in contrast to the other. If one transistor produces a positive then the other provides a negative pulse. Therefore, the clock input PIN 01 of the IC goes 0 and 1, respectively.

IC CD4033 is a decade counter IC that functions and outputs numbers on 7 segment display LT543. The IC works such that each positive pulse at the input of the IC advances the output of the IC by count one. Furthermore, a high RESET signal clears the decade counter to its zero counts. The seven decoded outputs (a, b, c, d, e, f, g) produces proper segments with a pattern, thus, representing the decimal numbers from 0 to 9 on the 7-segment display.

The operating voltage of the circuit is 5V. 100KΩ variable resistor in the circuit adjusts the speed of the display on the 7-segment display. Moreover, the diode 1N4148 prevents the circuit to operate in negative polarity.
