Introduction

Imagine you’re making a device that needs a dual supply, while you have the single supply available. Moreover, the supply you have is having low voltage while you need a higher voltage for your circuit. This would surely make you worried and you may think to buy the dual power supply of needed voltage for your device. But, it may also cause you more money. Thus, no problem on this planet earth comes without a solution or cure. Hence, to solve this problem, designers made a circuit that can convert the single DC supply of low voltage to a dual DC supply of greater voltage. Now, to understand the whole circuit, in this tutorial, we are going to create a “9V Dual Power Supply from 3V”

Working Explanation

This 9V Dual Power Supply uses the 555 timer IC, that is utilized in an astable multivibrator mode. The 555 IC generates oscillation and delays. Pin 8 of an IC is for the supply voltage, we have given the 3V DC supply. pin 1 is for the ground. Since we want the IC in astable multivibrator mode, therefore we have connected pins 6 and 2. The capacitor connected with these pins gets charged by the resistor R1 and get discharged by the resistor R2. thus, this whole thing set the duty cycle. The square wave output of an IC is observed at pin 3. Now there are two rectification units. first clears the negative part and gives the positive 9V and second removes the positive part and gives the negative 9 V. In this way, dual supply is observed.

Application and Uses

  • It can be used in some operational amplifier circuits.
  • DC motors can use this circuit for the rotation in two directions.
