74LS490 IC contains a pair of high-speed 4-stage ripple counters. Each half of the SN54 /74LS490 has individual Clock, Master Reset and Master Set (Preset 9) inputs. Each section counts in the 8, 4, 2, 1 BCD code. The 74LS490 IC has a wide range of working voltage, a wide range of working conditions, offers a wide variety of features such as ESD protection & thermal overload protection, and directly interfaces with CMOS, NMOS, and TTL, making it very reliable to be used in high speed applications.

A decade/BCD counter is a serial digital counter which can count up to 10 decimal digits. It goes through 10 unique combinations of output & RESETS for every new clock input. A BCD counter can count 0000, 0001, 0010, 1000, 1001, 1010, 1011, 1110, 1111, 0000, and 0001 and so on.
