The 74LS290 is a part of the 74XXYY IC series. 74LS290 is a high speed 4 bit ripple type counters partitioned into two sections. Each counter has a divide-by-two section and a divide-by-five section, which are triggered by a High to Low transition on the clock inputs. The 74LS290 IC has a wide range of working voltage, a wide range of working conditions, and directly interfaces with CMOS, NMOS, and TTL.

What is a Decade/Binary Ripple Counter?

A Binary Counter is a serial digital counter that counts ten digits. it resets for every new clock input. As it can go through 10 unique combinations of output, it is also called as “Decade counter”. A binary counter can count 0000, 0001, 0010, 1000, 1001, 1010, 1011, 1110, 1111, 0000, and 0001 and so on. A 4 bit binary counter will act as a decade counter by skipping any six outputs out of the 16 (24) outputs.
