The 74LS191 is a synchronous, reversible up/down counter having an inherent complexity of 58 equivalent gates. The 74LS191 is a 4-bit binary counter and the 74LS190 is a BCD counter. Synchronous operation is provided by having all flip-flops clocked simultaneously so that the outputs change coincident with each other when so instructed by the steering logic. This mode of operation eliminates the output counting spikes normally associated with asynchronous (ripple clock) counters. The output of the IC always comes in TTL which makes it easy to work with other TTL devices and microcontrollers.
What is a Synchronous Binary Counter?
A Synchronous Binary Counter is a serial digital counter that counts ten digits. it resets for every new clock input. As it can go through 10 unique combinations of output, it is also called as “Decade counter”. A Synchronous binary counter can count 0000, 0001, 0010, 1000, 1001, 1010, 1011, 1110, 1111, 0000, and 0001 and so on. A 4 bit binary counter will act as a decade counter by skipping any six outputs out of the 16 (24) outputs.
