15V/3A Regulated Power Supply circuits are in common use in many academic & industrial circuits. These DC supplies provide an easy manner of testing & troubleshooting electronic equipment & projects. So, in this project, we are going to design a simple 15V/3A Regulated Power Supply Circuit Using LM1084 Low Dropout Positive Voltage regulator IC.

LM1084 is a Positive Voltage Regulator with a low voltage drop at a high current value. The maximum voltage drop by the LM1084 regulator at 5A of load current is 1.5V. LM1084 Pinout config is similar to LM317T IC Model. You can even adjust the regulated output voltage just by using two resistors. LM1084 comes with an integrated Zener diode for current limiting and thermal shutdown purposes.

Working explanation

The main component of this circuit is an LM1084 low dropout positive regulator IC. An Input 18V AC/DC is sent to a bridge rectifier (to convert AC into rippling DC, In DC signal it has no effect). The signal then goes through a smoothing capacitor C1 (2200uF/25V) to remove any residual noise before going on towards the LM1084 Regulator IC.

The Voltage regulator (LM1084) produces a constant 15V/3A signal. The output signal can be tuned by connecting a 4.7K pot across the ADJ & OUT pin of the IC. The DC signal then passes through smoothing capacitors C2 (0.1uF) & C3 (47uF/25V) before moving on towards the output. The output can be taken by a simple rail connector.

Applications

  • DC power supplies are widely in use in low voltage applications such as charging batteries, automotive applications & trainer/testbench support applications.
