DC adjustable power supplies are an integral part of electronics, with the sole purpose of providing pure DC signal to various equipment and home appliances such as light fixtures, power tools, etc. By Definition, a DC power supply takes in an AC/DC Signal (depending upon the configuration) & shifts it to the desired voltage level. So, in this project, we are going to build a simple 1.2V To 15V 5A Adjustable Regulated Power Supply Using LM1084 Low Dropout Positive Regulator IC.

The core of this 1.2V To 15V 5A supply is an LM1084 IC. LM1084 is a Low Dropout Positive Regulator IC. with a low voltage drop at a high current value. The maximum voltage drop by the LM1084 regulator at 5A of load current is 1.5V.

Working Explanation

The heart of this circuit is an LM1084 low dropout +ve voltage regulator IC. A DC signal in the range of 17V to 29V functions as an input to the circuit. This DC signal passes through a smoothing capacitor (100uF) to remove any extra noise from the input supply. The signal then moves on to the (Vin) of the regulator IC.

The LM1084 IC steps down the DC signal (in a range of 1.5V to 15V) while maintaining the output current at 5A. Here, a 5K pot can be connected to the ADJ pin of the IC to tune the output voltage. The regulated DC signal then passes through a smoothing capacitor (10uF) before moving on towards the output.

Applications

  • DC Power supplies serve in applications such as powering home appliances, power tools, test bench supplies & trainer board supplies.
